THE PROGRAMME OF THE OCCASION

The alarm went off at 7.30am so I was able to have a large buffet breakfast at leisure. I booked a taxi to go to the Civic Centre and met our party on the steps.

(Most of the photographs were taken by me but I acknowledge and thank those people in our party who have sent me pictures to add to this website)

OUR PARTY AND THE AMERICAN FLAG

We soon were joined by all the dignitaries to whom we were presented and were soon called to the area round the plaque which at this stage was hidden by a White Star pennant. Proceedings started with a welcome from Dr Janet Owen, (on left) Arts and Heritage Manager of the City Council.

The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Southampton. Councillor Brian Parnell and the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Parnell came forward and the Mayor told us of the tragedy of the lost postmen of the Titanic.

Mr Michael Bricker, the American Information Management Attache then gave an excellent speech concerning his connection. Two of the postmen who died were from America.

The Lord Mayor and Mr Bricker removed the pennant, unveiling the Plaque

The Reverend Julian Davis then blessed the plaque, which by the way was made from a reserve propellor manufactured for the Titanic but which had not gone on the fateful voyage.

There was then a photocall and the hall was lit up with flashes.

We were then invited to the Lord Mayors parlour for some tasty snacks and we chatted to all the people who were there.

I met people I had not seen for a while yet we talked as though we had only parted yesterday. The Titanic draws a crowd of people each year all of whom are connected by our deep interest in the Titanic.

2.30pm : A LECTURE GIVEN BY CLAES-GORAN WETTERHOLM
who spoke about "Those Travelling 3rd Class" on the Titanic.
This was held at the Oceanography Centre, Waterfront Campus, Southampton Docks

The second lecture was by a member of the National Oceanography Centre talking about "Under the ice".
